A4 Engine wont start - fine 2 days ago

Hi Chaps, I have a 1996 A4 1.8T Sport and its always started fine, even if I've left it for a week. Today after 2 days off work, frost and rain the car won't start - had to call in sick with the flu!! Engine turns over but fails to start, petrol is low on sensor in car just on red but only just. fans come on fine in car and loads of vaults on battery. Is this just damp? any ideas maybe 5 points I should do to check - maybe spray lightly with WD40??? Thanks in advance.
