Question Starter / Ignition problem 2001 A6 Quattro

I have an intermittent problem with my starter/ ignition.
Once or twice every two weeks or so, when I depress the clutch and turn the ignition key, I get nothing, other than the dashboard lights coming on.
The starter does not engage at all. After anywhere from 5-20 retries, the car starts fine.
I have had this issue for over a year, maybe two. I have tried to find common influences, such as weather, heat/cold, rain, tc. but to no avail.
