A4 Tdi avant Brake light failure

Anyone know what is going on here...
My ESP dash light is on constantly and the glow plug light is flashing on the dash - I read via a forum that it can indicate rear brake light failure, so I checked it out and sure enough both brake lights are not working, however top boot light strip is OK.

Took out both rear light clusters and checked the bulbs and they seemed OK, I changed them anyway with 2 new bulbs and problem is still there!

Is the flashing coil light on dash just to warn me that there is a problem with the lights? as in the car manual it talks of an engine management issue and should be taken into service straight away.

The coil light flashed briefly a few weeks ago then went out and I put it down to a glitch as it didn't happen again untill now. Quoted £105 for Audi to check it out and do some testing. Any Ideas folks?
