Default HELP! DEALER RIP OFF!!! Fuel Sending Unit

I always believed in dealer work because of warranty issue but man if they charge you an arm and a leg it makes you think twice. I drive an AUDI A4 Turbo 2005. My problem is that the dealer has my car for almost 2 weeks already coz they couldnt figure out the problem until now. I dont have enough money to pay $1700 to replace a fuel sending unit for my model. I checked online and they only cost $350 which I can afford but not $1700. Is there by any chance a manual or instructions on how I can replace that part. The service guy told me that the only part that needs to be replaced is that unit. Ripping me off? Believe so.

All comments and advice is greatly appreciated.
