Default help need info

Just Got A 98 A4 1.8t Fwd W/92,000 Miles And Was Told Tranny Was Bad But Was Change Not So Long Ago Prior, Had A Technician Friend Check It Out His Thought Is Clutch Plate Is In Pieces. Would Anybody Know About This, I Could Put It In 1st 2nd 3rd 4th & 5th But Not Reverse In 1st I Can Go But Hear Grinding So Dont Want To Force It And Also Once Started Cant Let Go Of Clutch Or Else It Dies. Any Info Can Help And Recomendations Of Good Shops In Oc So-cal
