It’s been a while since we’ve gotten to enjoy a high-performance vehicle. Audi has come to our rescue by letting us test-drive the 2010 S4 for the week and before we introduce it, we’d like to thank Ingolstadt for this fine piece of machinery.

First Impressions: At first we were a bit skeptical to get inside the new Audi S4 since it had dropped its 340-hp V8 for a smaller – less powerful engine. However, once we got moving, we were completely blown away by the new supercharged 3.0 TFSI V6 that makes 333-hp with a maximum torque of 325 lb-ft – it is ridiculously quick.

Since we haven’t gotten our stopwatches out yet, we’ll just give you the specs as Audi puts them. Mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission, the 2010 Audi S4 goes from 0-60 mph in just 4.9 seconds and keeps going to a top speed of 155 mph. Enhancing performance is a new optional quattro with sports rear differential that dynamically varies torque between the rear wheels (40% front / 60% rear under nominal conditions). Audi has also upgraded the braking system specifically for the S4, which provides outstanding stopping power.


The 2010 Audi S4’s main competitor is the BMW 335i sedan. While Audi says that the 2010 S4 gets a repositioned pricing point to be in line with the 335i, it still costs $7,000 more. What does the $47,300 S4 do better that you should go out and pay an extra $7,000? Well, it gets from 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds, compared to the 335i which does it in 5.3 seconds, and it offers best in-class fuel-economy at 18/28 mpg (city/highway) or 21 mpg combined – the 335i returns 17/27 mpg.
