Hello welcome to Audi Forum,

Yes, the Interior tag do not function properly in some vehicle which may be due to windshield containing metal oxide or an internal heating element. So sadly, The External tag's are the only option in these cases. They have the ones that mount on the front license plate, you may opt for that.

E-Z pass works fine in our Q5 (NYC area), I do not think Q5 has metallic insulation or heated windshield.

I'd try again or get new tag-may be old tag has intermitent problem.

May be you should contact your Dealer and enquire whether your Q5 is equipped with metallic insulation or heated windshield.

Just used my EZ Pass repeatedly the last couple months in NY, NJ, Del. and MD. I wonder if you mounted it too high. I don't have it affixed to my windshield and instead just hold it against the glass, 3/4 of the way up, velcro side out.
