Hello dave welcome to Audi forum,

This problem is very common on A4's. This may be caused due to various number of reasons. The main suspect in 90% of these cases is the Mass Airflow Meter. In some cases it may be due to problems in the Inlet Manifold, turbo or Boost Leak/Boost control leak. In very rare cases Chipped cars/tuning boxes can also interfere with engine management causing the problems. The best thing to do would be to check for the Fault codes, so that the proper cause of the malfunction can be diagnosed and rectified. Hope you get it rectified soon.

Regards
