Now in its sixth year, Design Los Angeles is an automobile designers' conference at the LA Auto Show that provides opportunities for designers and design industry professionals to meet and discuss common interests and issues. The conference is held on the second Press Day of the show, thereby enabling designers the opportunity to attend manufacturer press conferences prior to Design Los Angeles itself.

The automobile has traditionally played an important role in young people's social lives and has acted as a method of self expression. Today, communication technology is changing how we connect, interact and express ourselves. How does this change the role of the automobile? How will a new generation of drivers age 16-23, raised with cell phones, web cams and online communities emotionally connect the automobile in 2030? Will this new generaiton also challenge the conventional automobile ownership model by 2030?

I. Premise: 2030 - Future of the driving environment

Future generations will be born into a comprehensive digital environment. Enchanted by technology, drivers will be accustomed to the convenience of automation in their vehicles. The next generation of vehicles will provide autonomy far beyond today’s vision. Although autonomous driving will provide safety, efficiency, and convenience, it can also lead to a detached and sterile driving experience. Audi, true to its “Vorsprung durch Technik” philosophy, showcases two vehicles that are truly engaging in addition to the aforementioned advancement.
