Electrical Problems?? Advice required!

I've got a A3 2.0L Fsi SE Petrol. Recently i've been have problems where the engine has been cutting out. While driving along (It can happen at any time) the car suddenly loses all power as if there isn't any fuel going to engine. During a long drive the car did this around 30 times and then the emissions light came on the dashboard. I called the RAC out who hook it up to his laptop and the error was:

Fault Code : P2542

All the RAC guy did was remove the connector and spray WD40 on it. That seem to slow the problem for a little while, after driving it yesterday it started cutting out again. I am also noticing that i'm getting strange electrical problems:

Engine Water level light keeps appearing on the dash (the car was service 2 months ago and the water level if perfect)
Auto lights have come on in the middle of a bright day (only way to fix it is to turn engine off)

Has anyone else heard of problems like this before? What would be your advice for fixing it?
