Default 2oo9 Audi A4 Avant::Wagon Lust or Bust

Is it real? The introduction of the new A4 lineup this fall would be incomplete without a station wagon variant — at least as far as Audi is concerned.

What they said: “The A4 Avant provides excellent drivability, uncompromising quality and a higher utility value for sports and recreation,” press materials said. “This vehicle combines elegance and intelligent functionality.”

What they didn’t say: Though Audi makes fine wagons, they keep getting clobbered in the United States (remember the “allroad”). Overseas, Audi says they are “the most successful premium station wagon of its class.” So if and when America falls back in love with the station wagon, Audi is ready.

What makes it tick? Two engines are offered in the United States: a 200+ horsepower turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and an optional 265-horsepower V-6 turbo. Three diesel turbos are offered in Europe, but so far not stateside, despite Audi’s stated intention to be among the first to bring clean diesels to America.

How much, how soon? On sale within a few weeks of the A4 sedan’s arrival this fall; prices should be close to current levels of $28,000-$38,000.

How’s it look? Not as big — a neat optical illusion because it certainly is bigger, as the whole package has grown in length by almost five inches. Shortening the front overhang and rounding off the D-pillar make a big difference.
