Lewis Hamilton; Whole Wheat Bread? Last season the media and the British fans talked about Lewis Hamilton like he was the next best thing since sliced bread. Being Canadian, my reference is, of course, Jacques Villeneuve. So I wondered; if we compare their maiden year in Formula 1, how truly wonderful is Lewis? Is he really “one of a kind”? So here they are, side by side, facts and statistics of Villeneuve’s 1996 season and Hamilton’s 2007 season: Jacques Villeneuve
(Williams-Renault)
4 Wins
3 Pole Positions
6 Fastest Race Laps
11 Podiums for 16 Races
1st Victory at his 4th Race
Fought for Championship until the last race
Lost because of a technical problem on the last race (lost a wheel)
Race against 2 times World Champion, Michael Schumacher Lewis Hamilton
(McLaren-Mercedes)
4 Wins
6 Pole Positions
2 Fastest Race Laps
12 Podiums for 17 Races
1st Victory at his 6th Race
Fought for Championship until the last race
Lost because of a technical problem on the last race (software*)
Race against 2 times World Champion, Fernando Alonso
How amazing! Now, only time will tell if Lewis Hamilton will best Jacques Villeneuve and get his Championship on his second year of Formula 1. I, for one, very doubt that fact. I tend to agree with Lewis fellow British driver; Jenson Button who said that Lewis may just has missed his only chance at clinching a World Title in F1. |
